On a perfect spring morning in April, we canoed across the lake to a quiet cove which is often a favorite hangout for visiting waterfowl.
We were watching a pair of ducks in the water near the shore, trying to identify them, when suddenly another pair of ducks took flight. We couldn't see them well, but did get a nice long look at the remaining pair, as they swam warily through overhanging bushes, deeper into hiding. They were wood ducks!
Though I have heard the wood ducks calling at times, this was my first sighting of these shy birds.
How beautiful they are!
